These decisions represent a sea change in governance. The long liberal reign on the Supreme Court has finally ended. The rollback of the administrative state, the abolition of divisive affirmative action programs, and the overturning of the still-fragile Roe v. Wade decision: Each decision is more important than the last, and implemented without Trump even being in office. This is the power of the Supreme Court on display. Governing in a truly conservative way may have even saved Trump’s reelection, by energizing his base in a race he was expected to win.

Leaving aside his penchant for gold Louis XIV furniture, Donald Trump is no king. His politics are rooted in the piratical spirit of former President Andrew Jackson. This is blue-state America, arrogantly claiming the right to rule on the basis of superior wealth, institutional strength, and a supposed wisdom that in fact embodies the worst of the monarchical system.

Whether or not Trump wins against Biden or whoever else the Democratic Party establishment parachutes into November, the presumptive Republican nominee can confidently claim the title of the most effective conservative political figure in half a century.
