'I saw a video from Bengal…': PM Modi slams opposition for 'selective attitude towards atrocities against women'
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday referred to a chilling incident in which a woman was beaten up in public in West Bengal's Uttar Dinajpur. During his speech in the Rajya Sabha, PM Modi said he had seen a video from West Bengal, but none of the opposition leaders spoke about it.
“The opposition's selective attitude towards atrocities against women is very worrying. I have seen a video from Bengal on social media where a woman was being beaten up. The incident happened in Sandeshkhali. But even senior leaders (of the opposition) have not mentioned a word about it,” he told the Upper House.
“I have heard great leaders in the House. But this pain is not reflected in their words. Those who consider themselves progressive women leaders have also turned a blind eye because they are linked to a political party there (in West Bengal). And that is why they are silent. They are playing selective politics,” the Prime Minister said, referring to the TMC, which is part of the INDIA bloc.
On Sunday, a video showing the couple complaining about an alleged illicit relationship went viral. The man seen in the video beating the couple with a bamboo stick has been identified as TMC strongman Tajmul alias JCB. The BJP has alleged that the accused was close to TMC MP Hamidul Islam. Police said that the couple was allegedly engaged in an illicit relationship due to which they were flogged towards a kangaroo court.
Commenting on the incident, MP Hamidul Islam said that in Muslim Rashtra there are certain rules and punishments but there were excesses in this case.
BJP MP Bishnupar Saumitra Khan on Tuesday spoke about Muslim appeasement in Bengal and said that in the next 10 years, Muslim rule would be established in the state. “Waha par Muslim rashtra ka shashan chalu ho gya. sab se badi dikkat ki baat yahi hai (Muslim Rashtra rule has started there… this is the biggest problem),” the BJP MP said, adding that Hindus cannot say Jai Shree Ram there, cannot do Saraswati and Kali Puja.
