Imran Khan, other party leaders acquitted in ECP protest case

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, along with former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and several other party leaders, were acquitted on Wednesday in a case registered at Aabpara police station.

Magistrate Yasir Mehmood announced the reserved verdict.

The court also acquitted leaders including Sheikh Rasheed, Asad Qaiser, Shehryar Afridi, Faisal Javed, Raja Khurram Nawaz and Ali Nawaz Awan.

This is one of several other cases Imran Khan and his party leaders have faced since his government was toppled in 2022. He has been in custody since August last year and was convicted in some cases ahead of this year's national elections.

The iddat or non-Islamic marriage issue now constitutes the main obstacle to his release.

The case in which he was acquitted earlier in the day related to the protests outside the Election Commission of Pakistan office in the federal capital over the Toshakhana 2022 verdict.

Lawyer Sardar Masroof and lawyer Ansar Kayani represented the former prime minister and others in court.

He asked the court to dismiss the case as politically motivated and to release his client.

The prosecution, however, opposed his arguments and claimed that Khan and his party leaders had orchestrated protests against the ECP.

However, the court, after hearing both sides, reserved its verdict and announced it earlier today.
