Erdogan, Putin discuss strategic projects, business goals
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin met on Wednesday to discuss bilateral and global issues in the Kazakhstani capital Astana, where the leaders gathered for a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
The two leaders discussed various issues, including the current situation in the war in Ukraine, Israel's ongoing attacks on Palestinian territories, efforts to find a solution to the crisis in Syria and the fight against terrorism, Turkey's Communications Directorate said in a statement.
Erdogan said Turkey would continue to work for peace in its region and the world.
He said Turkey can lay the foundation for a consensus to end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine with a ceasefire, adding that a fair peace that can satisfy both sides is possible.
The Turkish leader stressed that Israel's attacks on the Palestinian territories and threats against Lebanon target regional and global peace and stability, and that the spread of conflicts would cause the greatest harm to countries in the region. He called on the international community to focus on stopping Israel, which has killed nearly 38,000 Palestinians in Gaza since Hamas' cross-border incursion on October 7, 2023.
Erdogan said Turkey was determined to prevent the formation of a terrorist state along its borders.
The Turkish president also stressed the importance of ending instabilities in his region, particularly the Syrian civil war that began in 2011, saying that “Turkey is ready to cooperate to find a solution.”
“We have discussions [with Russia] “As for the Sinop nuclear power plant, I think we can take serious steps on this issue,” Erdogan said, referring to a nuclear power plant project in Turkey's Black Sea region. It would be Turkey's second nuclear power plant, after the one in the south of the country, and its second plant built through a partnership with Moscow.
The Turkish president expressed confidence in reaching the ambitious target of $100 billion in trade volume, citing strong growth potential in bilateral relations.
Erdogan invited Putin to visit Turkey, and the Russian leader said he intends to make the trip in the near future.
The Sinop plant is expected to be the country's second nuclear project after the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Mersin, southern Turkey, which is currently under construction by Russia.
