Imran Khan, other PTI leaders acquitted in separate case

ISLAMABAD: The District and Sessions Court in Islamabad has acquitted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and several other prominent leaders of the party in a case registered at Aabpara police station.

Judicial Magistrate Yasir Mehmood announced the reserved verdict, exonerating the former prime minister as well as senior PTI leaders Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Sheikh Rashid, Shehryar Afridi, Faisal Javed, Raja Khurram Nawaz, Ali Nawaz Awan and Asad Qaiser.

The acquittal marks a notable victory for the PTI leadership, which had been embroiled in a legal battle following the registration of the case.

Speaking outside the court, a PTI spokesperson expressed relief and reiterated the party's commitment to upholding the rule of law. “This verdict reaffirms our faith in Pakistan's judicial and judiciary system,” the spokesperson said. “Our leaders have always maintained their innocence and today, justice has prevailed.”

In another matter, the Islamabad District and Sessions Court has indicated that it may conclude the nikah case during iddat against former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi by July 8.

Additional Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka on Tuesday heard the main appeals filed by the couple against their sentences in the case.

During the hearing, PTI founder Salman Akram Raja's lawyer argued that the Supreme Court had given protection to women in the matter of iddat, stressing that the 90-day period after a divorce is meant to provide a chance for reconciliation and not to be a tool against women.

Raja also questioned Mufti Saeed's statements, pointing out discrepancies in his testimony. “Mufti Saeed said that a woman's word was final regarding iddat, but then he made a false statement in court,” he added.
