Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed pride in winning the 2024 general elections, marking his government's return to power for the third time. He said the return of a single government after 10 years is an unusual event in Indian democracy that has taken place after six decades.

What is the greater truth than the fact that we have completed 10 years and there are still 20 to go, he said while replying to the debate on a motion in the Rajya Sabha thanking Speaker Draupadi Murmu for her address in the joint session of Parliament.

One-third done, two-thirds left, Modi said in a veiled response to Congress leader Jairam Ramesh's taunt calling Modi a one-third prime minister.

Ramesh had earlier mocked him, suggesting that the BJP-led coalition would share power on a rotational basis, with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu taking turns to lead the government. The BJP, the Nitish-led Janata Dal (United) and the Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party are the three main allies in the newly formed coalition government.

As Modi delivered his speech, opposition MPs chanted slogans and then walked out of the Upper House. The move drew sharp criticism from Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar, while Modi mocked the rival MPs, saying they were running away after being beaten.

Prime Minister Modi's speech in Rajya Sabha:

1) Modi said the election result showed that people had rejected propaganda and voted for performance. Referring to the opposition bloc INDIA, he said voters had rejected 'bhram ki rajneeti' and chosen bharose ki rajneeti. The people of my country have faith in us, only us!

2) Modi added that as India becomes the third largest economy in the world, a positive impact will be seen in every aspect, not only in India but also across the world.

3) We envision an unprecedented emergence of Indian businesses, startups and industries on the global stage. I strongly believe that our Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities will play an important role as growth engines in our third term, he noted.

4) He then spoke about the Centres’ project to transform the public transport system over the next five years. This century is a technology-driven century. We will soon see new footprints in new sectors, he said.

Modi attacks opposition:

5) He also criticised the Congress-led opposition and said that they do not believe in doing anything. Responding to the opposition's claims that India was anyway on track to become the third largest economy, Modi mocked them, saying that these academics are used to running a remote-controlled government on autopilot mode.

6) He also expressed his surprise by referring to the new habit of Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi of carrying a copy of the Constitution. People who are now walking around with a copy of the Constitution had objected when I had announced the celebration of Constitution Day on November 26, saying what is the point of bringing Constitution Day when January 26 is already here.

On the opposition's walkout, Congress MP Rajeev Shukla claimed that it was done because the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, was not allowed to speak. “There is a tradition that the Leader of Opposition is allowed to speak. The Leader of the House is also allowed to speak. But there is a new trend that the Leader of Opposition is not allowed to speak. This is a mistake and that is why the opposition MPs walked out of the House,” he said.
