UN chief hopes to see Imran Khan's current situation 'evolve' in a positive way

Islamabad: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wants to see Imran Khan's current situation “evolve in a much more positive way”, his spokesperson said, days after a UN panel called the prosecution of the jailed former Pakistani prime minister “politically motivated”.

Khan, 71, has been behind bars since last August after being convicted in the Toshakhana corruption case and subsequently sentenced in other cases ahead of the February 8 elections. The sentence in the Toshakhana case was suspended in April while Khan was acquitted in the encryption case last month. The only case he has been convicted in is for violating the Iddat period during his marriage to his current wife Bushra Bibi.

The Dawn newspaper reported that when asked at a news conference a day ago whether the UN chief supported the UN panel's recommendation to immediately release Khan, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said: “This is a recommendation by an independent panel. We want to see the current political situation, the current situation of Mr Khan, evolve in a much more positive way.”

The UN chief's support came after the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which is mandated to investigate cases of deprivation of liberty by governments, said on Monday that the cases against Khan were without legal basis and “politically motivated” to exclude him from the political arena.

The committee said the appropriate solution would be to release and compensate the former prime minister. This is the second international outcry over the government's action against Khan in a week after the adoption last week of a US resolution calling on Pakistan to thoroughly investigate allegations of irregularities in the February 8 election.

Reacting to the development, the Pakistani government on Tuesday rejected the request, saying the arrest of the jailed former prime minister and the cases pending against him were internal matters.

The fact that Khan has won many cases is a sign of a transparent and fair judicial system. Any claim that goes beyond the constitution, law and international norms will be labelled as discriminatory, biased and contrary to justice, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar said in a statement responding to the UN agencies' report.

He also said that Pakistan as an independent state implements the constitution and existing laws through the courts. Imran Khan has all the rights according to the constitution and law of the country and international norms, he is in jail as a convicted prisoner, Tarar said.

His remarks come after the Pakistani government's embarrassing indictment, with the U.N. panel calling Khan's detention in at least two cases without any legal basis.

The latest expression of support from the world body shows that Khan has gained international support for his plight, which should worry the Pakistani government.
