Jokowi inaugurates South Korean battery and electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia

MERAHPUTIH IN WEST KARAWANG – – Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) inaugurated the South Korean Battery and Electric Vehicle Ecosystem in Indonesia, which was held at PT Hyundai LG Indonesia (HLI) Green Power, West Karawang, Wednesday (03/07/2024).
In his speech, President Jokowi expressed his belief that the inauguration of this battery and electric vehicle factory would be a new chapter and an important milestone in Indonesia's commitment to becoming a global player in the battery cell and electric vehicle ecosystem.
“The most important thing is that we can really enter the electric vehicle supply chain as a global player. It has already started and this is the first and largest electric vehicle battery cell factory in Southeast Asia,” he said.
President Jokowi also stressed that Indonesia has a competitive advantage in the electric vehicle ecosystem due to its wealth of materials.
“I am sure we can win our competition with other countries, because the mine is here, the nickel is here, the bauxite is here, the copper is here, there is a smelter, it goes to the cathode and the precursor, then goes to the EV battery, then the car factory is there, integrated into an ecosystem for electric cars,” he stressed.
The president also appreciated the consortium between Hyundai and LG in building a large package for the electric battery ecosystem, which shows the improvement of relations between South Korea and Indonesia.
“With an investment of IDR 160 trillion that will be carried out in stages. Hopefully, this will mark the improvement of relations between the Republic of Korea and Indonesia,” he concluded. (ed.)
