The only case that keeps Imran Khan in jail in Pakistan

Islamabad: A Pakistani court on Wednesday said it would deliver its verdict in the only case related to former prime minister Imran Khan that has kept him in jail. The court will deliver its verdict on July 12, on the appeals of Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi against their conviction in the illegal marriage case.

The Islamabad court, just five days before Pakistan's February 8 general elections, had convicted the duo after Bushra Bibi's ex-husband Khawar Fareed Maneka filed a complaint alleging that they had married during the former first lady's Iddat period, PTI reported.

In Islam, there is a waiting period called “iddat” that a woman must observe after a divorce or the death of her husband, which usually lasts about four months. This period is intended to avoid confusion about paternity and to allow for emotional healing.

In a specific court case, Maneka asked the court to annul a marriage. Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka adjourned the proceedings until July 8, asking the defense lawyer to complete his arguments. He also set July 12 as the deadline for the court's decision.

Earlier, on June 27, the same court had rejected appeals by Khan and Bushra Bibi seeking to suspend their sentences in a related case.

After the hearing, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Gohar Khan said the Iddat case was the first of its kind, designed to politically victimize Khan and put pressure on him.

“A case of personal nature was created to bring Khan Sahib into compromising situations but he remained strong despite the involvement of a woman in this case,” he said.

In 2018, Imran Khan, who would later become Prime Minister of Pakistan, married Bushra Bibi. Initially, Bibi was Khan’s spiritual guide, but their relationship evolved romantically over time. She divorced her husband of 28 years, with whom she had five children, to marry Khan, known for his cricketing career and previous reputation as a playboy.

Khan, now 71, has faced legal challenges, including imprisonment since August last year due to convictions in corruption cases linked to Toshakhana, although the sentence in the corruption case was suspended in April. He was recently acquitted in another case but remains in Adiala Jail due to ongoing legal proceedings over his marriage to Bushra, as required by Islamic law (Iddat).
