How Boris Johnson went from Tory secret weapon to electoral liability
In May 2020, as Johnson led the country through Covid, and well before the Partygate scandal broke, he enjoyed a net approval rating of 79% among 2019 Conservative voters and over 15% among voters as a whole (a figure calculated by deducting negative responses from positive responses).
A year later, after a slight decline, he was still in positive territory with all voters and remained above 60 percent with the Conservatives.
That all changed in January 2022, when he apologised to parliament for attending a lockdown-breaking garden party at Downing Street, before sliding into negative territory even among Conservative voters.
His apology appears to have earned him some credit, as his approval rating rebounded to plus-40 territory among Conservatives in April 2022, but the Chris Pincher affair, in which Johnson was accused of ignoring warnings about the former whip's behaviour, sent him back down and he found himself in negative territory even among Conservatives when he resigned in July that year.
His personal ratings, up and down since then, stood at +27 among Conservative voters in 2019 and -14 among all voters on June 2. Since then, they have plunged to +13 percent among Conservatives and -25 overall.
It is hard not to conclude that the betting scandal, which was largely confined to the Conservative Party, is responsible for the party's downfall. Voters compared Gamblegate to Partygate in the election, and for all senior Conservative figures there seems to be guilt by association.
Johnson's many detractors know where his greatest weakness lies. Partygate has left an indelible scar on his reputation, and if he tries to reverse his decision, his enemies will be sure to reopen the wound.
