Ukraine defines just peace as full restoration of territorial integrity; Erdogan seeks mediator status
A just and mutually satisfactory peace is possible in the Russian-Ukrainian war, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during a meeting with dictator Vladimir Putin. Ukraine interprets a just peace as the complete restoration of territorial integrity, Oleksandr Merezhko, chairman of the Ukrainian parliament's foreign affairs committee, said in a commentary to LIGA.net.

“It is remarkable that Erdogan used the term 'fair peace' in his proposal, the same term that President Zelensky used. When we talk about fair peace, we mean peace based on the principles of international law and the UN Charter,” the Servant of the People MP said.
He added that a just peace implies the complete restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity and respect for its sovereignty. This includes the right to join any international organization (including NATO) and the non-use of force in international relations, he added.
Merezhko is convinced that Erdogan understands that Ukraine, as a sovereign state and subject of international law, has all the rights that NATO member Turkey has.
“On the one hand, we all remember the format of the grain deal and Erdogan's role in it. On the other hand, the Ukrainian leadership has repeatedly openly stated its readiness to engage in dialogue with Putin through mediators, essentially following the format of the grain deal,” said Andriy Osadchuk, a member of the committee and an MP from the opposition Holos party.
According to him, there is now a competition for the status of such a mediator, with Erdogan undoubtedly in a leading position due to his successful experience in conducting similar negotiations.
However, there are many other stakeholders, and while Ukraine strives and fights for a just peace, “a group of politicians from all over the world are trying to be peacemakers,” Osadchuk concluded.
