Jokowi denies proposing his son's name for Jakarta leadership
JAKARTA – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has rejected the allegation that the name of his youngest son, Kaesang Pangarep, was proposed to political parties to be nominated to lead Jakarta in the upcoming regional elections (Pilkada) in November.
“I have never done this to anyone. I have not done this to political parties either. You can ask them,” Jokowi said in Karawang, West Java, on Wednesday.
The President stressed that all aspects of the Pilkada fall within the competence of the political parties and the decision to appoint a regional leader is their prerogative.
“I am neither the president nor the owner of the party, so don’t ask me,” Jokowi said.
Earlier, Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) Secretary General Aboe Bakar Al Habsyi accused Jokowi of interfering in Kaesang's candidacy.
However, the presidential office and Kaesang, who is also chairman of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), have refuted the accusation.
“Don't involve Mr. President. I am the president of the PSI,” Kaesang said last week.
He stressed that the decision on the PSI's candidacy in the regional elections is his as party president.
Although several politicians have contacted the PSI for support, several factors will be taken into account in determining a candidate, Kaesang stressed.
In the February general elections, the PSI won eight seats in the Jakarta Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD).
“Many parties have proposed (the names of) their candidates to be supported by the PSI,” Kaesang noted.
“The statement by the PKS Secretary General could be an attempt to close the door to a coalition with the PSI. No problem,” he noted.
He expressed hope that those spreading rumors about him will not disrupt the regional electoral process by spreading misleading and false information to the public.
