Xi, Putin reaffirm unity against West at Kazakh summit

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin reaffirmed their unity to counter the United States on Wednesday, during a meeting held on the sidelines of a regional summit in Kazakhstan, state media reported.

Putin told Xi that cooperation between Russia and China was “one of the main stabilizing factors on the international scene” and pledged to further strengthen collaboration with Beijing, according to Russian news agency Tass.

Putin also described bilateral relations as being “in the best period in their history,” saying they are based on the principles of equality, mutual benefit and respect for each other's sovereignty.

Xi Jinping stressed the need for China and Russia to stick to long-lasting friendship amid “an international situation fraught with turbulence and change,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

The two leaders held talks on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in the Kazakh capital Astana.

Putin said the organization, which brings together Russia, China, India, Iran, Pakistan and four Central Asian countries, is “one of the important pillars of a just and multipolar world order.”

He added that cooperation between China and Russia is “not directed against anyone” and that the two countries have no intention of creating blocs or alliances, Tass said, in an apparent reference to multilateral mechanisms involving the United States and its allies.

Xi said China and Russia should make new efforts to “safeguard their legitimate rights and interests” as well as the basic norms governing international relations, the Chinese ministry said.

Putin said he expects Xi to attend the BRICS summit to be held in October in the central Russian city of Kazan, Tass reported.

The BRICS group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, welcomed five new members in January, including Egypt and Iran. Moscow and Beijing have been strengthening cooperation with emerging and developing economies, collectively known as the Global South.

Xi said China supports Russia in fulfilling its responsibilities as the BRICS chair, uniting the Global South, preventing a “new Cold War” and opposing “illegal unilateral sanctions and hegemonism,” the Chinese ministry said.

The two leaders last met in Beijing in May and agreed to deepen their bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership. China and Russia have recently strengthened ties, with Beijing pushing back against Western sanctions against Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.

Regarding the Ukrainian crisis, Putin and Xi agreed that there was a “lack of prospects” in all formats without Russian participation in resolving the problem, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Switzerland hosted a summit in June on ending the war in Ukraine, attended by about 100 countries and organisations, but Russia was not invited and its main supporter, China, did not attend.

The two-day summit in Astana, which runs through Thursday, is expected to approve Belarus' membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), established in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. China will soon take over the rotating presidency of the group, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
