UN Secretary-General Guterres calls for 'positive change' in former Pakistani PM Imran Khan's situation

Islamabad, July 3: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an improvement in the current situation of PTI founder Imran Khan, two days after a UN human rights group called the detention of the former Pakistani prime minister a “violation of international law”.

“We (the UN secretary-general) would like to see the current political situation, the current situation of Mr. (Imran) Khan, evolve in a much more positive way,” said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN chief, in response to a question at a daily press briefing. “This is a recommendation of an independent panel,” Mr. Dujarric added.

He was responding to the following question: “The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) has unanimously issued a recommendation to release Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, unconditionally. Does the SG support this recommendation?”

Imran Khan has been in jail since last August and has been convicted in several cases ahead of national elections in February. Khan's party says the charges are politically motivated and aimed at thwarting his return to power.

Imran is serving his sentence in the Iddat case in Adiala Jail. His sentences in two Toshakhana cases against him have been suspended while the Islamabad High Court acquitted him in the encryption case.

Earlier, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention – which is mandated to investigate cases of deprivation of liberty by governments – had said the cases against Imran Khan were “without legal basis” and politically motivated to exclude him from the political arena.

The panel considered that the appropriate solution would be to release and compensate the former prime minister.

This is the second international disapproval of the government's action against the PTI and its jailed founder. The move comes a week after the US House of Representatives passed a resolution demanding Pakistan thoroughly investigate allegations of irregularities in the February 8 elections.

The Geneva-based UN group on arbitrary detention said on Monday: “An appropriate solution would be to release Mr Khan immediately and grant him an enforceable right to compensation and other reparations, in accordance with international law.”

He said Khan's legal troubles were part of a “much broader campaign of repression” against him and his party. It also denounces “widespread fraud on election day that stole dozens of parliamentary seats.”

However, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar on Tuesday snubbed the UN report, calling Khan's arrest and prosecution an “internal matter” of Pakistan.

He added that the courts have initiated legal proceedings against the PTI founder in light of the Constitution and existing laws.

“The founder of PTI is entitled to all rights as provided by the Constitution and laws as well as international principles,” Tarar had said, adding that the former prime minister was currently in jail as a convicted prisoner.
