UN chief hopes Imran's situation will change 'in a much more positive way': Spokesperson – Pakistan

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wants to see the current situation of PTI founder Imran Khan evolve in a much more positive way, his spokesperson said.

Imran is serving his sentence in the Iddat case in Adiala Jail. His sentences in two Toshakhana cases against him have been suspended while the Islamabad High Court acquitted him in the encryption case.

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which is mandated to investigate cases of deprivation of liberty by governments, said on Monday that the prosecution of Imran was without legal basis and politically motivated to exclude him from the political arena.

The panel said the appropriate solution would be to release and compensate the former prime minister. This is the second international disapproval of the government's action against the PTI and its jailed founder in a week after the adoption last week of a US resolution demanding that Pakistan thoroughly investigate allegations of irregularities in the February 8 elections.

The government and its allies on Tuesday rejected the recommendations of the UN working group regarding Imrans' detention and called it a conspiracy against institutions.

Asked at a news conference a day ago whether the UN chief supported the panel's recommendation to immediately release the PTI founder, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said: “This is a recommendation of an independent panel.”

In a statement on Tuesday, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar dismissed the task force recommendations as not legally binding and said the former premier's detention was an internal matter.

He added that the courts have initiated legal proceedings against the PTI founder in light of the Constitution and existing laws.

The PTI founder is entitled to all rights as provided by the Constitution and laws as well as international principles, Tarar had said, adding that the former prime minister was currently in jail as a convicted prisoner.
