Boris Johnson calls on Stevenage voters to back Tories
In a video posted on social media, the former prime minister backed Mr Clarkson, the Conservative candidate for Stevenage, saying he would be “a great MP”.
But Kevin Bonavia, the Labour candidate for the constituency, hit out at his opponent, saying: “Any candidate with moral values and integrity would not accept the support of someone who broke the law by partying during Covid while people here couldn't visit their dying loved ones.”
Mr Johnson, who resigned as prime minister in 2022 after several scandals including Partygate, said: “It is only by voting for Alex Clarkson… that we can hope to ensure that we do not have a huge Starmergeddon supermajority with ever more wokery, more illegal immigration, more useless and impotent pandering to Brussels, and of course, ever higher taxes for you and your family.”
The statement comes after Mr Johnson's first campaign appearance on Tuesday, when he addressed a Conservative rally in Chelsea.
Mr Clarkson said he “warmly welcomed” Mr Johnson's support, and added that the former prime minister “was right to warn of a brutal Labour majority”.
“If the Socialists win in Stevenage it will mark the start of the most left-wing government since the war.

“Every vote counts in Stevenage. My grandmother came here with her family in 1958. Four generations of my family have lived and worked here.
“I know this constituency, I know its heart lies in its people and I promise to stand up for Stevenage at every turn to represent its values.”
Mr Bonavia described the video as “a desperate attempt to drag a past prime minister into this campaign, because the current prime minister is deeply unpopular with the people here”.
“The message I received is clear. Whether it is the conservatives of the past, present or future, people feel that it is time for change.
“But we will only get change if people vote for him on Thursday, July 4.
“Only the Labour Party offers this change. And I am ready to deliver it.”
The other candidates running in Stevenage are Paul Dawson (Greens), Peter Hopper (Reform UK), Lisa Nash (Liberal Democrats) and Joshua Smith (Christian Peoples Alliance).
