In Astana, Erdoan offers help to end Russia-Ukraine war – Euractiv

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan told Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (July 3) that Ankara could help end the war between Ukraine and Russia, but Putin's spokesman said Erdogan could not play the role of intermediary in the 28-month-old conflict.

Speaking to Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in the Kazakhstani capital Astana, Erdogan said he believed a fair peace that suited both sides was possible, the Turkish presidency said.

But Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov ruled out any role as an intermediary between him and the Turkish leader.

“No, it's not possible,” Peskov told a Russian television reporter who asked him whether Erdoan could take on such a role, according to the Russian news agency Tass. The agency did not explain why the Kremlin opposed Erdoan's participation.

The Turkish presidency said the two leaders also discussed the war in Gaza and ways to end the conflict in Syria.

Turkey is a member of NATO, the Western military alliance led by the United States.

Unlike other NATO leaders, who have imposed sanctions on Putin's government, Erdoan has tried to maintain good relations with Russia and Ukraine throughout the conflict.

Turkey played a key role in brokering an agreement to ensure grain could be safely shipped from Ukrainian Black Sea ports. The deal remained in effect for a year.

Putin meets Xi

In Astana, Putin and Xi Jinping on Wednesday welcomed their Eurasian Security Club. The SCO promotes common approaches to external security threats, such as drug trafficking, and also focuses on combating any internal instability.

Putin and the Chinese president expanded the SCO, a club founded in 2001 with Russia, China and Central Asian countries, to include India, Iran and Pakistan as a counterweight to the West.

“The organization has firmly established itself as one of the key pillars of a multipolar and fair world order,” Putin said, adding that bilateral relations between Moscow and Beijing were at their best level in history.

“Our cooperation is not directed against anyone, we do not create any blocs or alliances, we simply act in the interests of our peoples,” Putin said.

In his opening speech, Xi Jinping told Putin that China and Russia should “uphold the original aspiration of friendship for generations to come” in response to a “continuously changing international situation.”

Calling Putin an “old friend,” Xi pointed to the progress the two countries have made in putting in place “plans and arrangements for the further development of bilateral relations.”

The Kremlin said Putin held a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the SCO summit.

Besides Erdoan, before his meeting with Xi, Putin met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as well as the presidents of Azerbaijan and Mongolia, Ilham Aliyev and Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh.

India said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expected in Moscow later this month, would not attend the Astana meeting, sending External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar instead.
