Prime Minister Narendra Modi today addressed the Manipur issue in Parliament, as the opposition accused the prime minister of “turning his back” on the violence-hit state.
Prime Minister Modi launched a scathing attack on the opposition for “politicising” the sensitive issue and said the Centre was determined to bring normalcy back to the state.
Violence has reduced and schools have responded in most parts of the state, he told the Rajya Sabha.
In a scathing reply to the Congress, PM Modi said the state had witnessed President's rule 10 times in the past. “Those who are taking up the issue have abandoned it. One day, Manipur will reject you,” PM Modi said.
“Those who know the history of Manipur know that there is a long history of social conflict in this country. No one can deny that the roots of this social conflict are very deep. Congressmen should not forget that President’s rule had to be imposed 10 times in such a small state. There must be a reason. This did not happen under our government,” PM Modi said, referring to the long rule of Congress in Manipur.
He said the central and state governments are talking to all stakeholders to restore peace. “Home Minister Amit Shah has been there (in Manipur) for several days,” PM Modi said.
The prime minister's remarks come a day after the Lok Sabha witnessed disruptions and protests by opposition leaders during his speech.
The apparent reason for the opposition protests was that Prime Minister Modi's speech came after a Manipur MP was abruptly interrupted.
When the Prime Minister started speaking, the MLAs intensified their enthusiasm by chanting louder slogans and banging their fists on the table. The slogans “Manipur, Manipur” and “Justice for Manipur” were heard, earning the Speaker of the Assembly a reprimand.
On Monday, Congress MP from interior Manipur, Bimol Akoijam, had expressed anguish over the absence of any reference to the ethnic violence-hit state in President Droupadi Murmu's speech.
Ethnic violence that began in May 2023 between the Meitei community, dominant in the valley, and nearly two dozen tribes known as Kukis – a term given by the British during the colonial era – who are dominant in some hilly areas of Manipur, has left more than 220 people dead and displaced nearly 50,000 people internally.
The general category of Meiteis wants to be included in the Scheduled Tribes category, while the nearly two dozen tribes who share ethnic ties with people from Burma's neighbouring Chin State and Mizoram want a separate administrative zone created for Manipur.
