ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan plans to travel to Berlin to watch the 2024 European Championship quarterfinal match between Turkey and the Netherlands, an official said Thursday, after a controversial gesture by a national team player sparked a diplomatic row between Turkey and host country Germany.
Turkey summoned the German ambassador to Turkey on Wednesday to protest German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser's criticism of Merih Demiral, who made a hand gesture associated with an ultranationalist group. In response, Germany summoned the Turkish ambassador to Berlin on Thursday, German news agency dpa reported.
Demiral scored both goals in a 2-1 win over Austria to earn Turkey a place in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
After scoring his second goal on Tuesday, the player made a gesture with each hand, a symbol of Turkish nationalism. The gesture is associated with the Turkish ultranationalist organization Ulku Ocaklari, better known as the Grey Wolves.
UEFA has announced it is investigating Demiral's alleged inappropriate behaviour. The football governing body has not said when the case might be closed.
Erdogan was scheduled to attend a meeting in Azerbaijan on Saturday, but decided to travel to Berlin to support the national team, an official said. Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz will represent the Turkish leader in Azerbaijan. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.
Faeser said on social media platform X that the symbol of Turkish right-wing extremists had no place in German stadiums and urged UEFA to punish the player for making the gesture.
His remarks sparked a strong reaction from Turkish officials. The Turkish Foreign Ministry denounced the investigation, calling it a politically motivated response to the use of a historical and cultural symbol.
Demiral said he had this celebration in mind before scoring. He described his gesture as something to do with this Turkish identity, because I am very proud to be Turkish.
The Grey Wolves group was founded as the youth wing of Turkey's far-right Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP, which is currently allied with Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development Party.
The group has been banned in France, while Austria has banned the use of the Grey Wolf salute. Germany's Federal Internal Security Agency monitors the Grey Wolf group's activities.
