PM Modi shares hearty laugh with Rohit, Kohli, Dravid, poses for pictures with T20 World Cup champions India

The last time Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Indian cricketers on November 19, 2023, the mood was somber. The cricketers' shoulders were down and their heads were bowed. The Prime Minister had to hold the hands of captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to cheer them up. Hugs were given to all the players and support staff. This was moments after the Indian team, after winning 10 matches in a row, lost to Australia in the ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad.

On July 4, 2024, a little over seven months after those grim scenes in the Indian dressing room, Prime Minister Modi met the Indian team again, this time at his residence in New Delhi in entirely different scenarios. The smiles knew no bounds. The letters of the word “champions” written in bold on the special jerseys of the Indian cricketers were visible from miles away. The bright stars above the BCCI logo shone.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the 2024 T20 World Champion Team India at a private ceremony at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg.

The players were seated in a circle around the Prime Minister. Captain Rohit Sharma was on the right of PM Modi while head coach Rahul Dravid was on his left. India vice-captain Hardik Pandya was seated on Rohit's right while batsman Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah were seated on the left of coach Dravid.

The Prime Minister had a candid chat and laugh with all the Indian cricketers. He also posed for a picture with the entire team and the T20 World Cup trophy.

The Men in Blue lifted the prestigious T20 World Cup trophy for the second time, beating South Africa by seven runs in Barbados on Saturday (June 29).

Indian team's busy schedule after grand return home

The T20 World Cup-winning Indian team landed in Delhi on Thursday and was given a warm welcome by fans who were waiting for the sight of their favourite heroes and the silverware.

The players then left the airport under tight security to reach ITC Maurya, where they rested for a few hours before leaving to meet Prime Minister Modi.

It is to be noted that only the cricketers, coaches and senior BCCI officials went to meet the Prime Minister while their family members were waiting at the hotel. The players will return to the hotel before flying to Mumbai for the open bus parade scheduled at 5 pm.

Team members, support staff, their families and media were stranded in Barbados, which was hit by Hurricane Beryl, at that stage a category four hurricane that passed through Barbados, with Bridgetown's Grantley Adams International Airport closed for three days.

The flight was organised by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah and took off on July 2 before arriving in Delhi around 6 am on Thursday. Board officials and members of the tournament's media contingent were also on board the flight.
