Jokowi: Government respects Ethics Council's decision to dismiss KPU chief Hasyim Asy'ari
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Joko Widodo or Jokowi responded to the decision of the Ethics Council of the electoral organization regarding the dismissal of the chairman of the General Election Commission (KPU), Hasyim Asy'ari, for alleged sexual harassment.
“The government respects the authority of the Ethics Council to decide the case. The government is also ensuring that the elections of regional heads are held smoothly,” he said in a video statement on Thursday, July 4, 2024.
Jokowi said the presidential decree that would formalize the KPU chief's dismissal was still being processed.
The Ethics Council read the verdict of Hasyim Asy'ari on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, in a sexual harassment case against CAT, member of the Overseas Electoral Committee of The Hague (PPLN).
Ethics Council Chairman Heddy Lugito fully accepted the CAT complaint and imposed the permanent dismissal of Hasyim Asy'ari as chairman and member of the KPU.
Hasyim Asy'ari thanked the council for removing him from his position as KPU head. “I would like to thank the ethics council for freeing me from the heavy duties as a KPU member,” Hasyim said on Wednesday.
Hasyim will be officially removed from office after Jokowi signs the presidential decree. KPU Commissioner Mochammad Afifuddin took over as acting KPU chairman after a plenary meeting on Thursday.
