LONDON: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Sher Afzal Marwat has fired a fresh salvo at former party member Fawad Chaudhry, claiming that PTI founder Imran Khan had revealed to him the former federal minister's “shady” role in the regime change operation.

“The PTI founder himself told me that Fawad’s role in the regime change operation was ‘suspect’,” Marwat said, adding that according to the jailed party founder, Fawad was in the “cohort” of then army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Marwat's latest remarks come after Fawad openly criticized the current PTI leadership, calling it an obstacle to the release of the jailed former prime minister and other leaders due to a lack of political strategy.

Due to the internal turmoil within the party, with leaders often openly engaging in public verbal spats, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and senior leader Asad Qasier contacted Fawad, urging him to remain silent for the time being and not criticise the PTI leadership.

Even Khan has agreed to regroup within the PTI and is expected to meet “both factions” today in Adia jail.

Earlier this week, party information secretary Raoof Hasan, speaking on Geo News' 'Capital Talk' programme, said Fawad was expelled from the PTI after joining another party, so he had no right to comment on the party.

Hasan also said that some “touts” were spreading a discourse against the PTI top leadership on social media, adding: “There is no impression within the PTI that those who have left the party should be reinstated.”

Continuing, PTI MNA Marwat said Fawad's claim that he had joined Jahangir Tareenand Aleem Khan's group on Khan's orders was actually a big lie.

The remarks come in reference to the former minister being spotted at a launch ceremony of the Istihkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) in June last year.

The party was started by Tareen and Aleem and was largely made up of PTI defectors who had left the party after the infamous May 9 riots that saw military installations targeted and the resulting crackdown on PTI leaders and workers.

Stressing that the PTI views the former member's role with “suspicion”, Marwat said: “He [Fawad] worked against the party's interests and also served as a messenger to convey messages to General Bajwa.

“People like them fled when the party was in need,” he added.

It is worth noting that former Prime Minister Khan, since his ouster from office in a no-confidence vote in April 2022, has repeatedly accused General Bajwa of being behind the “regime change” decision that led to the ouster of his government.

Khan had earlier accused the US of toppling his PTI administration.

Downplaying Fawad's legal woes, Marwat said the prosecution against the former PTI member was in fact a “mere sham”.

“He was arrested only because he [served] as a pretext to return to the former ruling party,” the PTI leader said. “If [Fawad] comes back to the party, so what is the fault of others [who left],” he added.

“It is also true that Fawad spent his days behind bars in VIP jails as he had an ‘environment’,” Marwat said, adding that the former PTI member was an uninvited guest who spoke against the party.

Revealing that the PTI founder had summoned him for a meeting, the politician said he would meet Khan as soon as he returned to Pakistan.

“I will meet the PTI founder by July 15 or 16,” said Marwat, who is currently in Britain.
