PTI leaders cry foul over 'denial of permission' to meet Imran Khan in Adiala jail

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders said they were denied permission to meet the party's jailed founder Imran Khan in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail despite waiting outside the facility for several hours on Thursday.

Opposition leader in the Senate Shibli Faraz and opposition leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub protested the “humiliation” they suffered for trying to meet Khan in prison.

“We are all united and there is no division within the party. We are all on the same page,” Senator Shibli said at a press conference outside Adiala jail.

“We came to meet our leader in prison. This is our right. We were elected to the assemblies through elections and we are loyal to our party,” he added.

Shibli's remarks on divisions within the party come after Khan admitted the presence of factions within the party. However, he refuted reports of a forward bloc within the PTI. There are no major divisions within the party, the PTI founder said, addressing reporters in a courtroom in the Adiala headquarters yesterday.

In a media address, Shibli stressed: “I am the leader of the opposition in the Senate and Omar Ayub is the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly. But we were forced to wait outside the prison. We were not even allowed to sit in the prison mosque.”

There is no difference among the party leaders, he said, adding, “We will not allow anyone to spread false information and create divisions among us.” He reiterated that the party would not be deterred by the propaganda of the opponents and would continue to work together for the betterment of the country.

Shibli said: “We have pledged allegiance to the founder of the party.”

False propaganda is being spread through “rented spokesmen” who highlight divisions within the party, he said, calling it a conspiracy to sow chaos within the party.

Omar Ayub, who exchanged harsh words with the security personnel standing guard outside the jail, said that the meeting with Imran Khan was scheduled but the party leaders were not allowed to meet him despite waiting outside the jail since 1 pm.

Ayub, who expressed his displeasure, said a senior official had told them that they (prison officials) had received orders to do so. “They (the government) believe that they can exert psychological pressure on us,” he said, adding that the meeting had been scheduled as per court orders.

The PTI chief said the party stood by Khan and would remain committed to doing so, adding: “We will hold them accountable through a privilege motion in the National Assembly.”

“One thing is clear: we will not surrender to anything they might do because we are the soldiers of the PTI founder and can do anything for him,” said PTI leader Shehryar Afridi, who was also present outside the prison.

He said opponents were trying to create divisions within the party.

Another party leader, Shandana Gulzar, said reports of differences within the party were baseless, adding: “I would not have contested if I had any difference of opinion.”
