PKB seeks to appoint Sandiaga Uno as West Java governor
Jakarta. The National Awakening Party (PKB) is considering nominating Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno for the West Java gubernatorial election, a party leader said on Thursday.
The PKB is currently monitoring Sandiaga's eligibility to run in the country's most populous province before making a final decision, PKB Deputy Chairman Jazilul Fawaid said.
“Then we need to know if he accepts our nomination,” Jazilul said at the PKB headquarters in Jakarta. “For the PKB, Mr. Sandi is a worthy candidate that we can propose to the people of West Java.”
The PKB will soon form a coalition with other parties to reach the parliamentary threshold needed to nominate a candidate for governor, he added.
Sandiaga was elected deputy governor of Jakarta in the 2017 election, but left the post two years later to become a running mate of presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto.
After losing the presidential election, he was hired in President Joko Widodo's cabinet as tourism minister.
Sandiaga left Prabowo's Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) ahead of the 2024 presidential election and joined the United Development Party (PPP), which failed to win a seat in the national legislature for the first time in its history.
Sandiaga said recently that he had not received a mission from the PPP to participate in the November 27 gubernatorial elections across the country and that he would concentrate on his ministerial work.
