PTI leaders denounce denial of access to Imran Khan in Adiala jail

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders were denied permission to meet the party's jailed founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi despite waiting for hours outside the facility on Thursday.

Senator Shibli Faraz, leader of the opposition in the Senate, and Omar Ayub, leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, expressed outrage at the “humiliation” they faced while trying to visit Khan in prison.

Speaking to media outside Adiala Jail, Faraz stressed the unity within the PTI, saying, “We are all united and there are no divisions among the party ranks. We are all on the same page.”

The leaders insisted on their right to meet Khan, saying their position as elected representatives gave them the right to visit their party leader.

“We came to meet our leader in prison. It is our right to do so. We were elected to the assemblies through elections and we are loyal to our party,” he added.

Faraz's comments on party unity came after Imran Khan acknowledged the existence of factions within the PTI but dismissed rumours of a forward bloc.

Khan reiterated that there were no significant divisions within the party while appearing before a court in Adiala jail on Wednesday.

Faraz criticised the treatment they received, pointing out that they were not even allowed to sit in the prison mosque while waiting.

“I am the leader of the opposition in the Senate and Omar Ayub is the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly. But we were forced to wait outside the prison,” he said.

Ayub expressed frustration, recounting how a senior official told them that prison authorities had been ordered to deny them access.

“They believe they can exert psychological pressure on us,” he said, adding that the meeting with Khan had been scheduled in accordance with court orders.

PTI leaders have vowed to support Khan and not be swayed by propaganda or attempts to create divisions within the party.

Shehryar Afridi, another PTI leader present at the scene, said: “We will not surrender to whatever they might do because we are the soldiers of the PTI founder and can do anything for him.”

Shandana Gulzar, another party member, dismissed reports of internal differences as baseless, saying: “I would not have run if I had a difference of opinion.”

PTI leaders also indicated their intention to seek accountability through a privilege motion in the National Assembly, stressing their commitment to support Imran Khan and maintain party unity in the face of external pressure.
