Widodo ensures smooth regional elections after KPU chairman's dismissal
Jakarta (ANTARA) –
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has assured that the 2024 regional elections (Pilkada) will go ahead as planned, following the dismissal of General Election Commission (KPU) Chairman Hasyim Asy'ari for sexual harassment by the Election Organization Ethics Board (DKPP).
According to the KPU's schedule, regional elections will be held simultaneously on November 27, 2024.
“The government will ensure that the regional elections are conducted smoothly, honestly and fairly,” Widodo said on the sidelines of a working visit to Sinjai district in South Sulawesi on Thursday.
He added that he respected the authority of the DKPP, which decided to fire Asy'ari for sexual harassment.
The President will immediately process the presidential decree following the DKPP's decision.
“The presidential decree is still being drafted,” he said.
The DKPP ordered Asy'ari's dismissal as chairman and member of the KPU after hearing the complaint filed against him by a member of the Overseas Electoral Committee (PPLN) in The Hague, Netherlands, identified by the initials CAT.
The decision was read out at a hearing at the DKPP office on Wednesday.
The DKPP accepted the complainant's complaint in its entirety and called on President Widodo to replace Asy'ari within seven days of his decision.
The report in this case was initially filed by the Institute for Legal Aid Consultation and Conflict Resolution Options, Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia (LKBH-PPS FH UI) and the Legal Aid Institute of the Indonesian Women's Association for Justice (LBH APIK), as the legal representatives of the victim, on April 18.
The victim's lawyer described Asy'ari's actions as a violation of the code of ethics, based on DKPP Regulation Number 2 of 2017 regarding the code of ethics and behavioral guidelines for general election organizers.
According to the victim's lawyer, Asy'ari put his personal interests first to satisfy his sexual desire for the victim.
