Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Chinese President Xi Jinping appeared at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting on Thursday (4/7/2024). At the global forum, he suddenly issued a message to the countries of the world.
Xi called on all countries to reject any foreign interference in their affairs. He also said the world is now at a crossroads.
“We should join forces to resist external interference, firmly support each other and pay attention to each other's interests,” Xi said at an SCO summit in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.
“Resolutely take control of the future and fate of our country as well as regional peace and development into our own hands,” he said.
“The world is once again at a crossroads,” he stressed.
Xi told world leaders that every country has the right to safeguard its development. This includes adhering to inclusiveness, jointly promoting technological innovation, maintaining the stability and smoothness of industrial and supply chains, and stimulating endogenous forces in the regional economy.
“To encourage the achievement of common development goals,” he said.
Xi's statement comes at a time when the country is increasingly at odds with the West. Recently, for example, China suddenly called on countries around the world to oppose efforts “decoupling”.
This is related to the separation that the West is making with China, especially by relocating factories from that country. The statement was made directly by Premier Li Qiang.
“We must open our minds widely, cooperate closely, abandon the formation of camps and oppose decoupling,” Li Qiang, China's second-most senior leader, who is tasked with managing economic affairs by President Xi Jinping, was quoted as saying by AFP.
According to Li, China's industry is currently developing rapidly. This is due to China's unique comparative advantages.
He called for “stability and smooth functioning” of the supply chain. Including “liberalization and facilitation of trade and investment.”
In fact, concerns about China's decoupling from Western countries have emerged after the two sides clashed over a number of issues in recent years. These include trade and technology.
Last month, for example, the United States raised tariffs on $18 billion worth of imports from the country, targeting strategic sectors such as electric vehicles, batteries, steel and critical minerals, a move that Beijing said would “seriously affect relations between the two superpowers.”
China is also under close scrutiny from the European Union (EU). The country is preparing to impose tariffs of up to 38% on its electric vehicles on July 4, citing concerns about unfair competition caused by large state subsidies.
The import duties will be temporary until November. However, later it will be fully implemented.
Previously, the SCO itself was a meeting that covered a vast territory from Moscow to Beijing. This group includes Kazakhstan, India, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Belarus.
