Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg has blamed the cabal that toppled Boris Johnson for the Tories' electoral failure.
The former business secretary described it as a terrible night for Rishi Sunak's party, which looks set to win just 131 seats in the House of Commons.
He said: “This is clearly a terrible night for the Conservatives. There is no other way to describe it than a bad night for the Conservative Party.”
Asked where it went wrong, he said: “I think there were problems in changing the leader, but I think we increasingly have a presidential system and people are voting for a prime minister rather than an individual MP.”
He added: “Voters expect that the prime minister they choose will remain prime minister and that it will be the voters who decide when that person is replaced, rather than it being done by a small cabal.”
I think the Conservative Party has taken its base vote for granted, which is why you see so many people who might have voted Conservative in the past switching to Reform.
Asked whether original sin was about getting rid of Boris Johnson, Sir Jacob said: Original sin is a very interesting theological question which I would be happy to discuss on another occasion.
I think people vote for a leader and new leaders need elections quite quickly. The mandate is increasingly personal and it seems to be a very strong mandate for Sir Keir Starmr and if that is the case I wish him well because we want good government for this country – whoever is in office at any given time.
In 2019, Mr Johnson led the Conservatives to their biggest election victory since 1987.
He stepped down as prime minister in 2022 following a mass revolt by ministers against his leadership, sparked by scandals including Partygate.
Sir Jacob said it would be interesting to see whether Nigel Farage can achieve a realignment of the right in British politics.
Asked whether he thought the Conservatives should have sought to join forces with Mr Farage, the former Tory minister said: “We are where we are and disaster does not seem to have been averted.”
