IHC seeks answers on Imran's allegations of agency interference in prison matters – Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday sought replies from the Adiala Jail Superintendent, Punjab Interior Minister and Defence Secretary on a petition filed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan against the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) interference in the jail administration.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Aamer Farooq heard the petition and after a preliminary hearing issued notices to the three government officials. The hearing was adjourned until next week.

In his petition filed through his lawyer Shoaib Shaheen, Mr Khan said that a major and a colonel of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) are in virtual control of Adiala jail.

The petition states that despite clear orders from the IHC, the Adiala Jail superintendent did not allow him to consult with PTI leaders and lawyers.

He cited the recent case decided by the IHC in which the court, referring to Rule 265 of the Prison Manual, had observed that the prisoner was entitled to write letters and interviews twice a week.

It is clarified that this order is adopted to recall, reiterate and preserve the values ​​and traditions of our legal system and that it has little to do with the identity of the petitioner alone, the petition states.

These values ​​and traditions must apply to everyone, regardless of the applicant, but it goes without saying that they acquire greater importance when the prisoner in question happens to be not only a political leader with a significant number of followers, but also the former holder of the highest executive office in the nation, he said.

He said the IHC has repeatedly asked the Adiala Jail superintendent to review the standard operating procedures according to which two days in a week is not enough for a meeting.

The petition pointed out that the Supreme Court while hearing the appeal against the amendments to the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) laws had offered to hold dialogues and had admitted the fact that the PTI and the petitioner, enjoying greater support among the public, are bound to play their important role in reducing the miseries of the general public.

However, according to the petition, this entire process has been handled by a Colonel and a Major of ISI who are creating interference and leniency in the civil administration due to malicious intentions against the petitioner and due to their interference, the petitioner is not able to consult the party leadership and his fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution are not being protected.
