Imran Khan announces his participation in APC in Operation Azm-e-Istehkam

Former Prime Minister and founding chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan has announced his participation in the government's All Parties Conference (APC) on Operation Azm-e-Istehkam.

In an interaction with media at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Friday, the former prime minister said the PTI members would attend the conference only as “observers”, stressing that the decision to participate was taken solely in the interest of Pakistan.

During his speech, the jailed PTI leader expressed distrust towards the chief justice and announced his intention to go on hunger strike in prison.

“I will announce the final date of the hunger strike after consulting my lawyers,” he said.

The government has decided to convene the APC to address the concerns of the coalition and opposition parties over the Azm-e-Istahkam operation. The conference aims to create political consensus and ensure that all parties adhere to the objectives of the operation.

On June 22, the Supreme Committee of National Action Plan, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, approved “Operation Azm-e-Istehkam” to eliminate terrorism and extremism across the country.

Prime Minister Shehbaz approved the reactivation of the national anti-terrorism campaign through the launch of this operation, symbolizing the national resolve with the consensus of all stakeholders including the provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Yesterday, it was announced that the government has decided to convene an All Parties Conference (APC) to address the concerns of political parties over Operation Azm-e-Istehkam.

According to sources, Prime Minister Shehbaz wants to gain the trust of all parties at this conference.

The date and time of the APC will be determined after the Prime Minister returns, and there are indications that it could take place within the next week.

Opposition parties, including the PTI, have expressed strong reservations over the Azm-e-Istehkam operation, demanding clarification on its framework and seeking assurance that all parties will be taken into account in their trust.

Moreover, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) also opposed the operation.

While the government's coalition partners agree that Operation Azm-e-Istehkam is necessary and should begin immediately, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari recently said that the federal government should still bring all parties around the table to work out a coherent strategy for the country's progress.

What is Operation Azm-e-Istehkam?

Operation Azm-e-Istehkam aims to eradicate extremism and terrorism in a decisive and comprehensive manner. It will coordinate and harmonize efforts on multiple fronts to address threats while intensifying efforts to curb terrorist activities through regional cooperation in the political and diplomatic spheres.

This operation will reinforce the renewed and vigorous efforts of the armed forces, with the full support of all law enforcement agencies. Effective legislation will be enacted to close the legal loopholes that hinder the prosecution of terrorism-related cases, thus ensuring exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.

This campaign will be complemented by socio-economic measures aimed at addressing the real concerns of the population and creating an environment that discourages extremist tendencies.

The forum reaffirmed that the fight against extremism and terrorism is Pakistan's battle, essential for the survival and well-being of the nation. It was decided that no one would be allowed to challenge the authority of the state without facing repercussions.

The forum also reviewed measures to ensure foolproof security for Chinese nationals in Pakistan. Following the approval of the Prime Minister, new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) were issued to enhance the security framework for Chinese citizens in the country.
