Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called Rishabh Pant's mother as the star wicketkeeper-batsman was recovering from his injuries after a car accident and asked doctors to treat him abroad if needed.
During an interaction with the T20 World Cup winning cricketers on Thursday, the Prime Minister said he had been following Pant's social media posts, showing his rehabilitation routine.
Pant survived a horrific car accident while driving from Delhi to his hometown Roorkee in December 2022. After a year of intense recovery and rehabilitation, he returned to professional cricket during the 2024 Indian Premier League and made his comeback for India at the recently concluded T20 World Cup in the Americas, which India won by beating South Africa in the final in Barbados.
“Your healing journey has been difficult. I used to see your posts (on social media), showing that you had done so much one day and so much the next,” the prime minister said.
Details of the conversation were released on Friday.
“I first discussed with the doctors and took their opinion before talking to your mother. I told them that if he (Pant) needs treatment outside India, please take him and get it done,” the Prime Minister said.
“It’s amazing that your mother had confidence in herself. I felt that a person with such a mother would never fail. I had that opinion and you showed it to the world.
“When I spoke to you, you said it was your fault (the accident). That is a great thing, you did not give any excuse, like there was a ditch etc. That was your open-mindedness. I take note of the little things in life and learn from others. You will inspire the people of India.”
Asked by the Prime Minister about his state of mind during those difficult days, Pant said: “It was a normal thought process, even though it was a very difficult time. I remembered it because you had called my mother and a lot of things were going on in my mind.
“My mother told me that the gentleman (the Prime Minister) had said that there was no problem and that gave me a kind of mental relaxation.
“During this time, I have also heard people questioning whether I will be able to play cricket again or not, whether I will be able to bat as well as keep wickets. I have been thinking for the last one and a half or two years that after I come back, I will do better than before and I will play international cricket again and see India winning.
