Imran Khan threatens hunger strike over lack of confidence in Pakistan's Chief Justice

Islamabad: Jailed former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan on Friday threatened to go on hunger strike if Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa fails to deliver justice in the cases against him.

The 71-year-old Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supreme leader made the statement during a media interaction at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, citing lingering concerns over Chief Justice Isa's involvement in benches dealing with party cases and its affairs.

He was present in court during the hearing of the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case at Adiala Jail, where he was lodged.

He opposed the presence of Chief Justice Isa in panels formed to hear cases related to his party, the PTI, and warned that he would have to go on hunger strike if the chief justice did not deliver justice.

“I am discussing the possibility of going on hunger strike. If I don't get justice, I will go on hunger strike,” he said, adding that his lawyers had opposed the inclusion of Chief Justice Isa on every bench hearing his party's cases.

Khan also said that former Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed had said that Isa cannot hear PTI cases. He added that PTI lawyers thought that they would not get justice, so our cases should be heard by someone else.

Chief Justice Isa clarified during the hearing of a PTI case that the panels set up to hear different cases are not formed by him but by a committee of three senior judges of the court and he is only one of the three members.

There is a history of mistrust between Khan and Chief Justice Isa.

Khan, while prime minister, filed a complaint to remove Isa from his judgeship over suspicions of corruption.

Therefore, Isa and his wife had to go through an arduous process and finally, the Supreme Court dismissed the charges against him.

In the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case, Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi are accused of receiving land worth billions of rupees as bribes from a real estate tycoon.
