Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Tajikistan to strengthen bilateral relations, state media reports

Chinese President Xi Jinping traveled to neighboring Tajikistan on Friday for a visit aimed at strengthening ties, state media reported.
Xi Jinping arrived overnight from Kazakhstan following a meeting of leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), where he held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and urged the bloc to “resist external interference.”
According to a report by the official Xinhua news agency from the Tajik capital Dushanbe, Xi Jinping pledged to take “China-Tajikistan comprehensive cooperation to a higher level.”
In a written statement issued upon his arrival in Tajikistan, Xi said he would hold talks with President Emomali Rahmon and expected the two to make “new plans and arrangements” to strengthen ties and hold an “in-depth exchange of views on the current international and regional situation.”
In the Kazakh capital Astana on Thursday, Xi Jinping told SCO leaders: “We should join forces to resist external interference, support each other, care for each other's concerns… and firmly control the future and destiny of our countries, as well as regional peace and development in our own hands.”
The SCO was founded in 2001 but has grown in importance in recent years. In addition to China, Russia and Belarus, its full members include India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan.
“It is of vital importance to the world that the SCO stands on the right side of history and on the side of fairness and justice,” Xi added.
Rahmon hosted a welcoming ceremony for Xi at Dushanbe airport, where more than 1,500 young Tajiks dressed in national costumes performed Chinese and Tajik songs and dances.
Xi Jinping previously visited Tajikistan in 2014 and 2019.
