Imran Khan's party to attend Pakistan government's consultative meeting on new counter-terrorism operations

Islamabad: Jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday announced that his party would participate in the official consultative meeting on a new operation against militants, following a dramatic increase in rebel attacks on security forces in recent months. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced last month the launch of Operation Azm-e-Istehkam to stem the tide of militancy in the country.

However, the idea of ​​a fresh military offensive has received a cool response from several political parties, including Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

To mitigate criticism of the new operation and garner wider support, the government has decided to take all political parties into confidence regarding the new military strategy and hold an All Parties Conference (APC) on the new operation against terrorists. While interacting with the media after the hearing of the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Khan announced that PTI leaders would attend the conference as observers.

“It is a matter of national importance and we will attend the conference for the good of the country,” he said.

The government has decided to convene the APC to address the concerns of the coalition and opposition parties over the new operation and to build political consensus among the parties on issues of combating militancy. The date and time of the conference have not been announced yet, but it is expected to take place next week. Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz, after a high-level committee meeting on June 22, had approved the “Operation Azm-e-Istehkam” to eliminate terrorism and extremism in the country.

The announcement came after a Chinese delegation visited Pakistan and held discussions on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) amid frequent deadly terrorist attacks on Chinese citizens working on infrastructure projects in the country.
