Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan to go on hunger strike over prison abuse

Islamabad, July 5: Former Pakistani Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan has announced plans to go on hunger strike to protest “ill-treatment in prison”.

During a media interaction at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Khan expressed his lack of confidence in Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Qazi Faez Isa and expressed concerns over the chief justice's involvement in the benches dealing with PTI-related cases and his personal matters.

He highlighted objections raised by his legal team over the judge's frequent presence, suggesting a belief within the PTI that justice may not be delivered impartially.

The founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said he would announce the date of his hunger strike after consulting his lawyers.

He also claimed that the prison director works for an army major and colonel stationed at the prison and cancels his meetings when the government demands it.

Khan stressed the need to build strong relations with Afghanistan to combat the terrorist group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). He said any operation against the TTP would be futile without Afghanistan's cooperation as the militants would simply flee across the border.

“Until you have the cooperation of Afghanistan, you cannot succeed in this operation,” Khan said.

Imran Khan said that Pakistan has a 2,500 km border with Afghanistan and the party has reservations over conducting the 'Azm-e-Istekham' operation.

Imran said the IMF could not solve Pakistan's problems and stressed the need for fair and transparent elections. Khan expressed concern that Pakistan, which was a leader till 1990, was now being overtaken by other countries.

“The country is controlled only by the elite. What is the point of a president who increases his household expenses? Electricity and gas bills have broken the backs of the people,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders on Thursday said they were not allowed to meet the party's incarcerated founder Imran Khan in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail after waiting outside the facility for a few hours to see him.

Several PTI leaders, including Leader of Opposition in the Senate Shibli Faraz and Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub, protested outside the jail after the jail meeting ended.

“We are all united and there is no division within the party. We are all on the same page,” Senator Shibli said at a press conference outside Adiala jail.
