Rahul Gandhi criticises Narendra Modi govt, claims martyr Agniveer received insurance money
On July 5, Rahul Gandhi criticised the BJP party at the Centre over the Agniveer controversy. The Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha pointed out that the family of Agniveer member Ajay Kumar, who died in a landmine blast in Naushera, Jammu and Kashmir in January, has yet to receive any government compensation.
Gandhi stressed that there was a “difference between compensation and insurance” and accused the Narendra Modi government of discriminating by not providing adequate support to the Agniveers who lost their lives for the country.
On social media platform X, Rae Bareli MP said, “The family of martyr Agniveer Ajay Kumar has not received any compensation from the government till date. There is a difference between compensation and insurance; the payment was made to the martyr’s family only by the insurance company.”
“The family of martyr Ajay Kumar has not received the help they should have received from the government. The family of every martyr who sacrifices his life for the country should be respected, but the Modi government is discriminating against them. Whatever the government says, it is a matter of national security and I will continue to raise it. INDIA BLOC will never allow the coalition forces to weaken,” he added.

The controversy flared up again on July 3 when Rahul Gandhi released a video showing the father of one Agniveer, who claimed that the family had not received any compensation or assistance from the Centre after his son died in a landmine blast in Naushera, Jammu and Kashmir, in January.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lied in Parliament about providing assistance to the family of martyr Agniveer. Martyr Agniveer's father Ajay himself spoke the truth and exposed their lies. The Defence Minister should apologise to the Parliament, the country, the Army and the martyr's family, Gandhi wrote in a message on X.
In the video shared by Gandhi, Ajay Kumar's father said that they did not receive any support from the Centre, only assistance from the Punjab government. He noted that the Defence Minister had told Parliament that If an Agniveer dies, a sum of 1 crore is paid to the family, but they have not received anything. He praised Rahul Gandhi for raising the issue and suggested that the scheme be scrapped.
In response, the Indian Army refuted the Congress leader's allegations, stressing that it was honouring the supreme sacrifice of Agniveer Ajay Kumar. It said the last rites were performed with full military honours and the family had already received 98.39 lakhs.
In addition, free benefits and others totaling approximately 67 lakhs, as per the provisions of Agniveer scheme, will be paid on final settlement of the account after police verification, taking the total amount to approximately 1.65 crore.

In his speech at the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi criticised the Agnipath project, saying it was the brainchild of the Prime Minister and originated from the PMO rather than the Indian Army. He compared it to demonetisation and said that if the INDIA bloc came to power, it would scrap the Agniveer project.
