Fact Check: Imran did not ask for better prison facilities from President Zardari and PM Shehbaz – Pakistan

Some media outlets reported on Saturday that PTI founder Imran Khan and his party urged President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to provide better prison facilities at Adiala Jail in a letter addressed to his lawyer Advocate Azhar Siddique. However, there was no such request from the former prime minister or his party.

Imran is currently serving his sentence in the Iddat case in Adiala Jail. His sentences in the two Toshakhana cases have been suspended while he was acquitted by the Islamabad High Court in the encryption case.

In a hearing before the Supreme Court on May 30, Imran had said that he was in isolation and had no access to any materials, legal assistance or even a library.

The federal government on June 6 submitted a report to the Supreme Court containing photographs and details of the facilities and amenities provided to him, challenging the statements about his conditions in Adiala Jail. The PTI had criticised the condition of Imran's cell.

Express Tribune today published a report titled 'Imran Khan demands better prison conditions in letter to President Zardari, PM Shehbaz'.

The introduction of the report reads: Imran Khan, the jailed founding leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has urged President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to ensure adequate prison facilities through a letter penned by his lawyer Azhar Siddique.

Similarly, news channel Capital TV also shared a video clip on social media platform X today with the caption: PTI has written a letter to the President and Prime Minister to provide facilities to Imran Khan in jail.

However, a careful reading of the July 5 letter, a copy of which is available on Dawn.com, revealed that it was written by Advocate Siddique, chairman of the Judicial Activism Panel (JAP), a self-styled public interest forum based in Lahore.

Examination of the contents of the letters has nowhere shown that they were written by the founder of the PTI or at his request or instructions.

The letter requested a report on Imran's living conditions, a list of people who met him, information about his solitary confinement and all the facilities he was entitled to under the law.

Contacted by Dawn.com for comment on the matter, lawyer Siddique denied the impression that Imran had ordered the letter to be written or had asked for better prison conditions for himself.

He did not make any such request, Siddique said of the PTI founder. He said that JAP took the initiative to draft and send the letter because it was a human rights organisation. He reiterated that Imran did not ask for the letter to be drafted nor did he play any role in it.

Moreover, neither Imrans' official X accounts nor those of PTI have shared links to the letter or its text, which they should have done if it had been written by them or on their behalf.

Therefore, Dawn.com has determined that the reports that Imran or the PTI sent the letter to state officials seeking improvement of its prison facilities are false and inaccurate. As confirmed by lawyer Siddique himself, Imran made no such request and has nothing to do with the letter, which was initiated on his own by the JAP.
