Putin, Xi congratulate new Iranian president
The Russian presidential office said President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory message to Iranian President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday.
Putin wrote that “Russian-Iranian relations are of a friendly and good-neighborly nature” and that the two nations “effectively coordinate their efforts to resolve topical issues on the international agenda.”
He added: “I am confident that your work as President will contribute to further strengthening constructive bilateral cooperation… in the interest of strengthening regional security and stability.”
Russia has reportedly purchased weapons from Iran, including drones, since the start of its invasion of Ukraine.
Putin appears keen to strengthen military ties after the reformist president, who values dialogue with Europe and the United States, takes office.
Chinese state media said Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to Pezeshkian on Saturday.
Xi said that in the face of complex regional and international situations, China and Iran have always supported each other.
He added that he attaches great importance to the development of China-Iran relations and is willing to work with Pezeshkian to guide the deepening of their comprehensive strategic partnership.
China, which already has its long break with the United States in mind, is seeking to promote multipolarization. It is strengthening its ties with Iran, a country that is in conflict with Europe and the United States under the leadership of a conservative government.
