Imran Khan accused of conspiring to spread anarchy from prison: PM's adviser

EAWALPINDI: Rana Sanaullah, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs, stirred controversy on Saturday by alleging that jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was plotting to foment political chaos from Adiala Jail. Speaking on Geo News’ ‘Naya Pakistan’, Sanaullah claimed that Imran Khan had been barred by the court from holding political meetings on the jail premises. “The PTI founder is not allowed to orchestrate plans for chaos while in jail,” Sanaullah stressed, pointing to unspecified evidence in the possession of the authorities that supposedly supports the claims. “We do not have any audio or video evidence ourselves, but the security officials inside the jail have it,” Sanaullah clarified when asked about the evidence of Imran Khan’s alleged activities. Sanaullah’s remarks come after the leaders of the former ruling party complained that they were denied access to Imran Khan at Adiala Jail despite waiting for hours. The PM’s advisor also criticised the PTI’s decision to hold a rally in Islamabad during the holy month of Muharram, suggesting that it was aimed at creating political turmoil, as reported by Geo News. “PTI’s desire to hold a public rally in Muharram is inappropriate and can lead to political chaos,” Sanaullah remarked, while distancing the government from the decision to deny the PTI permission for the rally in Islamabad, according to Geo News. Earlier in the day, the PTI called off its rally in Islamabad after the federal capital’s chief commissioner withdrew the no-objection certificate (NOC) for the event in Tarnol. The PTI leaders then moved the Islamabad High Court seeking contempt of court proceedings against the administration for revoking permission for the rally. Elaborating on his allegations, Sanaullah suggested that foreign elements had supported the PTI during the May 9, 2023, riots following Imran Khan’s arrest in an attempt to destabilise Pakistan. “The enemy countries are aiming to create anarchy in Pakistan through the PTI,” he added, referring to the protests that targeted civilian and military installations including Jinnah House and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, dubbed the “Black Day” by the military, leading to arrests under the Army Act. On the alleged foreign aid received by the PTI, Sanaullah indicated his willingness to disclose evidence if the federal cabinet decided to make it public, Geo News reported.
