Prison staff fail to produce Imran via video link

LAHORE:

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Saturday reserved its order on bail pleas filed by former prime minister Imran Khan in three different cases related to the May 9, 2023 vandalism incidents, including the attack on Lahore Corps Commander Jinnah House residence.

As the proceedings on the bail applications began, ATC Judge Khalid Arshad directed the court staff to contact the Adiala Jail authorities to produce Imran Khan in court through video link.

After a short while, the court staff informed the judge that they were trying to contact the jail authorities, but without success. The judge observed that the hearing could take place if the police representative confirmed that Imran Khan was currently lodged in Adiala Jail.

Imran Khan's lawyer Salman Safdar provided the jail superintendent's mobile number to the court staff. The court adjourned its proceedings briefly after asking its staff to contact the jail authorities to confirm whether Imran Khan was present in the jail.

When the proceedings resumed, the staff informed the ATC judge that the superintendent had confirmed the court's request. The judge asked the staff to include the jail superintendent's email in the court record. He referred to the Lahore High Court order regarding noting Imran Khan's presence through video link. “I just want to satisfy myself by seeing the petitioner through video link,” he said.

Prefacing his argument, Safdar said Imran was a victim of political persecution. “I have never seen any other politician facing so many cases,” he added. The lawyer argued that the May 9 vandalism took place while the former prime minister was in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

He said his client had announced a hunger strike in prison not to beg for clemency from the leadership, but to protest a system “that is failing to do him justice in these politically motivated cases filed against him with malicious intent.”
