Erdogan highlights historical and cultural ties between Iran and Turkey
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday criticized Israel's actions in the region, urging it to stop its “inhumane” attacks on Gaza.
“Israel should stop insisting on continuing these massacres and end these inhumane attacks,” President Erdogan told reporters on his flight back from Germany, Anadolu Agency reported.
“So far, it is Israel that has persisted in its attacks and massacres. It is Israel that is flouting human rights and international law,” he added.
Erdogan also expressed concern about Israel's regional ambitions, saying: “They (Israeli leaders) threaten Lebanon to relieve themselves. Israel must abandon its intention to spread conflicts in the region.”
Touching on relations with Iran, Erdogan stressed the importance of historical and cultural ties between the two countries.
“Iran is an important neighbor with whom we have historical and cultural ties. I expect Turkey-Iran relations to develop in a positive direction in the new period,” he said.
Regarding Turkey's relations with Syria, Erdogan also signaled a potential thaw in relations.
“As soon as Bashar al-Assad takes a step forward towards improving relations with Turkey, we will reciprocate,” he said, stressing our willingness to restore ties.
He added: “We will extend an invitation to Assad. We want to bring relations between Turkey and Syria back to the same level as in the past.”
Erdogan also emphasized the strategic partnership with the UK, pledging to further strengthen it. “We will continue to strengthen relations with our ally, the UK, in all areas in the new period,” he said.
