Jokowi congratulates Dick Schoof on his appointment as Prime Minister of the Netherlands
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Joko Widodo or Jokowi congratulate Dick Schoof who has been appointed Prime Minister of the Netherlands. Schoof replaces Mark Rutte who has led the Dutch government since 2010.
“I hope to deepen the strong and lasting partnership between our two countries,” Jokowi said in an official statement on the X account on Monday, July 8, 2024.
Schoof was a career bureaucrat who once headed the Dutch intelligence service AIVD. He became prime minister after a coalition deal in May quashed the candidacy of anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders. The coalition of supporting parties includes Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy and the centrist New Social Contract party.
Wilders will not be part of the government despite winning elections last year. However, a number of figures from the Party for Freedom led by Wilders have become ministers in the cabinet led by Schoof. The new Dutch government was sworn in on July 2, 2024.

Jokowi held a bilateral meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in New Delhi, India on September 9, 2024. Several topics discussed included the areas of development, economy, and the process of registering Indonesia as a member of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), as well as cooperation between ASEAN and the Netherlands.
The Ministry of Trade noted that from January to July 2023, the total trade between Indonesia and the Netherlands was recorded at USD 2.73 billion. During this period, Indonesian exports to the Netherlands were recorded at USD 2.17 billion, while Indonesian imports from the Netherlands were recorded at USD 559.60 million. During this period, Indonesia recorded a surplus of USD 1.61 billion.
