Jokowi says Indonesian economy, politics are stable
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, said the country's economy and politics are doing well. The head of state urged ministries and institutions to be more competitive in the face of global uncertainty.
“Thank God, we should be grateful, Indonesia’s economy and politics are very stable,” Jokowi said in a speech at the submission of the report on the results of the audit of the central government’s financial report 2023 at the Jakarta Convention Center, Senayan, Monday, July 8.
Jokowi said the Indonesian economy managed to grow by 5.11 percent in the first quarter. The former Jakarta governor also said Bank Indonesia and the Home Affairs Ministry are still ensuring that inflation is controlled in all regions.
“In addition, the electoral process went well. These are all fundamental elements for the development of our country,” Jokowi said.
The general election was closely watched by the public, who accused Jokowi of interfering in the presidential race. There were rumors that Jokowi had arranged for his son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to run as Prabowo's vice presidential candidate by asking the Constitutional Court, then chaired by Anwar Usman – Gibran's uncle and Jokowi's brother-in-law – to change the rules on the age limit for candidates.
Jokowi and the palace have repeatedly denied any interference in court matters. The ruling on the presidential election dispute also said there was no interference from Jokowi, although it issued an ethics note regarding the Prabowo-Gibran victory.
In his speech in Senayan this morning, Jokowi stressed the need for the government to strengthen global competitiveness in order to maintain economic and political stability. The former Jakarta governor said he hopes to achieve structural reform by simplifying procedures. “To be more efficient and results-oriented,” he said.
Jokowi also asked for the support of all components of the nation to maintain sustainability in order to bring progress to the country and hopes for a smooth transition process.
President Jokowi will be replaced by Gerindra Chairman and Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto in October 2024. The former Solo mayor is confident that the new administration led by Prabowo will pay close attention to the BPK's recommendations, just as he did during his years in office.
