Omar Ayub's house raided in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD:

The residence of Opposition Leader in the National Assembly and PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan in Islamabad was raided on Sunday by Mianwali police in collaboration with their counterparts from the federal capital, but he escaped arrest as he was not present at the scene.

Police carried out the operation at Ayub's house in F-10 in Islamabad, a day after an anti-terrorism court in Sargodha issued an arrest warrant against him. The opposition leader in the NA is wanted in a terrorism-related case.

Taking to social media platform X, Ayub confirmed the incident, saying that police from Islamabad and Mianwali had raided his house. “ATC Sargodha has issued arrest warrants against me.”

Ayub claimed that the federal and Punjab governments, in collaboration with their agencies, were desperately trying to arrest him due to his involvement in the 'Form 47' campaign – a political manoeuvre aimed at destabilising the current system.

“Let there be no doubt that we will continue our legitimate struggle until [former] Prime Minister Imran Khan [PTI founding chairman] is the prime minister, [again],” He continued.

Since its ouster from power in April 2022, the PTI has been engaged in a legal battle as it launched a nationwide anti-government movement. The situation escalated for the PTI on May 9, when the security apparatus’ facilities were attacked, allegedly by angry party activists and supporters, after security forces arrested the party’s founder from the Islamabad High Court on corruption charges.

At the time, the PTI had said that arresting Imran would amount to crossing its red line. Following attacks on its facilities, including war memorials, the military had declared May 9 a “Black Day,” describing it as a “dark chapter” in the country’s history.

As for Ayub, the PTI's parliamentary faction last month expressed disagreement with Imran's initial decision to accept his resignation as party secretary general, demanding its reversal and reappointment.

The request came 24 hours after the jailed PTI founding chairman approved Ayub's decision to quit his party post so he could “focus on his role as leader of the opposition in the NA.”

Amid rumours of internal dissension and confusion within the PTI, Ayub's resignation added to the uncertainty. Later, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, following Imran's directives, announced that Ayub's resignation as the party's general secretary had been rejected.
