After visiting Putin in Moscow, Viktor Orban leaves on peace mission to Xi Jinping in China
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban arrived in Beijing on Monday, where he was received by Chinese President Xi Jinping. It is Orban's third surprise trip since Hungary took over the rotating presidency of the European Union in early July, after the Hungarian leader visited Ukraine and Russia last week as part of what he calls a peace mission.

Images have emerged on Viktor Orban's social media accounts showing him shaking hands with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
China is a key power in creating conditions for peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine. That is why I came to meet President Xi in Beijing, just two months after his official visit to Budapest, says the message accompanying the photo published on the X network.
The message also carries the label #HU24EUwhich means the Hungarian presidency of the Council of the European Union, even though Brussels leaders protested Orban's tour and clarified that he had no mandate and did not represent the EU, and that his visits took place exclusively in the framework of bilateral relations.
Orban says he is on a peace mission
It is Orban's third surprise trip since Hungary took over the rotating presidency of the European Union in early July, after the leader visited Ukraine and Russia last week as part of what he called a peace mission.
His trip to Moscow, where he met Vladimir Putin, earned him strong criticism from his allies.
Hungary, under Orban's leadership, has become an important trade and investment partner for China, unlike other European Union countries, which want to become less dependent on the world's second-largest economy.
Orban's visit came days before a NATO summit that will discuss continued military aid to Ukraine against what the Western defense alliance has called an unprovoked war of aggression by Russia.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto is accompanying Orban on his trip to China, according to photos posted on Szijjarto's Facebook page.
The German Foreign Ministry cancelled a meeting scheduled for Monday in Budapest with German Foreign Minister Szijjarto late last week, a German Foreign Ministry official said on Friday.
Orban, a critic of Western military aid to Ukraine and who enjoys the warmest relations among EU leaders with Russian President Vladimir Putin, said last week that he recognised he had no EU mandate for the trip to Moscow but that peace could not be made from a comfortable armchair in Brussels.
