Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday left for a two-day visit to Russia, where he will meet President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and hold discussions with him on a range of issues. This will be PM Modi's first visit to Russia in nearly five years and he will travel to Austria on July 9-10 after concluding his engagements in Moscow.

The prime minister will visit Austria for the first time and will also mark the first trip by an Indian prime minister to the country in 41 years, after Indira Gandhi in 1983.

Before his departure, Prime Minister Modi said that his upcoming visits to Russia and Austria would provide India with an opportunity to strengthen relations between the two countries. He stressed that India shares a time-tested friendship with both countries.

The Prime Minister also He said he was looking forward to interacting with the Indian community living in these countries.

Speaking about his visit to Russia, the Prime Minister said, “The special and privileged strategic partnership between India and Russia has progressed over the last decade, particularly in the areas of energy, security, trade, investment, health, education, culture, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.”

“I look forward to reviewing all aspects of bilateral cooperation with my friend President Vladimir Putin and exchanging views on various regional and global issues. We seek to play a supportive role in a peaceful and stable region. This visit will also give me an opportunity to meet the vibrant Indian community in Russia,” he added.

On the day of his arrival, Vladimir Putin will host a private dinner for Prime Minister Modi. The following day, Prime Minister Modi will meet with the Indian diaspora in Russia.

The prime minister will also lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Kremlin on June 9. He will then visit the Rosatom pavilion at the exhibition site in Moscow.

“These engagements will be followed by small-level discussions between the two leaders, which will then be followed by delegation-level discussions led by the Honourable Prime Minister and the Russian President,” Foreign Minister Vinay Kwatra said at a press briefing earlier this week.

This will be Prime Minister Modi's first trip to Russia since the country launched its military offensive and invaded its neighbour Ukraine in February 2022. His last visit to Russia was in 2019, when he attended an economic conclave in the Far Eastern city of Vladivostok.

Earlier, the Kremlin had said that deepening trade and economic cooperation would be one of the key themes of the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Vladimir Putin during the latter's visit.

Prime Minister Modi said he would have an opportunity to meet Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and Chancellor Karl Nehammer. He described the country as a loyal and reliable partner of India and both countries share the ideals of democracy and pluralism.

“This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in over 40 years. I look forward to my discussions to take our partnership to even greater heights in new and emerging areas like innovation, technology and sustainable development, among others,” he said.

“Together with the Austrian Chancellor, I look forward to exchanging views with business leaders from both sides to explore mutually beneficial trade and investment opportunities. I will also interact with the Indian community in Austria, which is well regarded for its professionalism and conduct,” he added.
