After the national football team's 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands in the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship (EURO 2024), President Recep Tayyip Erdoan welcomed them to the locker room.
After the match at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, President Erdoan met with the players and technical staff of the national football team in the locker room alongside Youth and Sports Minister Osman Akn Bak, Turkish Football Federation President Mehmet Bykeki and UEFA Executive Committee Member Servet Yardmc.
“I congratulate you all,” Erdoan added, shaking hands with each national player individually. “Despite today's result, you are still our champions. We are very grateful to you. There will be more games in the future. In the future, we will be the winners. That's what I believe. You have done a great job so far. What happened has happened, and now the road ends. Currently ranked in the top 8, Allah willing, we will win the championship next season.”
Thanking President Erdoğan, technical director Vincenzo Montella said: “We are truly honored to represent such a country. We will focus on the future.”
Shortly after the match, President Erdoğan and First Lady Emine Erdoğan, Chief Advisor to the President for Foreign and Security Policy Ambassador Akif aatay KL and Deputy Head of Presidential Communications Aatay Zdemir returned to Turkey.
