Trump's Vice Presidential Candidate's Abortion Remarks Spark Anger Among Christians

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), a front-runner to be Donald Trump's vice presidential pick, has sparked fury among some Republicans after saying he supports access to the abortion pill mifepristone.

On NBC's Meet the Press Monday, Trump's potential running mate said he supports public access to the abortion pill. He also said Trump supports access to the pill.

The comments distance Vance and Trump from pro-life Republicans who want to see access to abortion restricted. Polls suggest that most Americans believe abortion should be legal in the early stages of pregnancy, and it is likely to be a key issue in the November election.

Another potential Trump running mate, Marco Rubio, has also said he supports the former president's plan to remove a federal abortion bill from the Republican agenda.

Christian author and podcaster Steve Deace condemned Vance and Rubio's positions on X, formerly Twitter, accusing Vance of being “sad and morally repugnant/sinful.”

Former Trump lawyer Jenna Ellis responded, writing: “This is how unscrupulous, power-hungry people operate.”

Commentator Ben Zeisloft, editor of the right-wing news site The Sentinel, wrote that by supporting the availability of abortion pills, Vance was “selling his soul” in an attempt to secure the vice presidential nomination.

Vance's office declined to comment further when contacted by Newsweek.

Vance and Rubio's comments come after a June decision in which the Supreme Court unanimously rejected an attempt to restrict mifepristone brought by the anti-abortion group Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine.

It is the Supreme Court's first major decision on reproductive rights since its landmark 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, a 50-year-old ruling that gave federal protection to a pregnant woman's right to choose an abortion.

Mifepristone was approved by the FDA in 2000 and can still be obtained from pharmacies and by mail. It is used in more than 60% of abortions in the United States.

Trump has taken many positions on abortion over the years, including in 2016, when he said that if abortion were not legal, women who sought it should be subject to “some form of punishment.” He has taken a more moderate stance since 2022, when the overturning of Roe v. Wade contributed to Republicans suffering heavy losses in the midterm elections.
