The Ostankino Tower, Europe's tallest standing structure, was lit up with the Indian tricolour on Monday to celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi's arrival in Russia.

Modi was greeted by Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov and received a guard of honour upon his arrival at Moscow airport.

We have arrived in Moscow. We hope to further deepen the special and privileged strategic partnership between our two countries, especially in the areas of future cooperation. Closer ties between our two countries will greatly benefit our peoples, the Prime Minister said in a message published on X.

Modi's arrival marks the start of his two-day visit to Russia and Austria.

In the next three days, I will be visiting Russia and Austria. These visits will be a great opportunity to deepen ties with these countries, with which India has a time-tested friendship. I also look forward to interacting with the Indian community living in these countries, Modi said on X before flying to Russia.

This is Modi's first visit to Russia in five years and since the start of the Russia-Ukrainia conflict.

According to a report by HT, Modi and Putin are expected to review relations between the two nations and discuss their views on current global issues.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with Russian state TV channel VGTRK: “The agenda will be very full, if not overloaded. It will be an official visit and we hope that the leaders will also be able to talk informally. We expect a very important and comprehensive visit, which is so crucial for Russian-Indian relations.”

In addition to a private meeting and lunch with Putin, Modi will also hold discussions with diplomats and visit an exhibition centre at the VDNKH complex, the Rosatom Pavilion. He will also address the Indian community in Russia.

On Tuesday, Modi will travel to Austria, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to the country in more than 40 years.
