President Joko Widodo releases IDR 18 billion in humanitarian aid for Papua New Guinea
: President Joko Widodo delivered a speech during the release of humanitarian aid to be sent to Papua New Guinea and Afghanistan on Monday (8/7/2024) at Halim Perdana Kusuma Airfield/ BNPB doc.
Jakarta, InfoPublik – President Joko Widodo released humanitarian aid worth IDR 18 billion to support landslide management in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea. The aid release took place at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, East Jakarta, Monday (8/7/2024).
The aid was distributed after the Papua New Guinea government requested international support to speed up emergency management in the event of a disaster. The President said it was a form of Indonesian sympathy and solidarity with countries affected by natural disasters.
“Indonesia is committed to becoming a global disaster laboratory, not only as a place to exchange knowledge but also as an active support for countries in need,” Joko Widodo said in a written statement from BNPB, Monday (8/7/2024).
The aid worth IDR 18 billion includes 80.5 tons of goods, including tents, generators, medicines, cleaning equipment, as well as food and other supplies. The President hopes that this aid can help Papua New Guinea recover quickly.
Medical assistance from the Indonesian Ministry of Health was also distributed, including additional food packages and medical supplies to meet basic health needs.
BNPB Chief Lieutenant General TNI Suharyanto led this aid delivery mission which involved delegations from various ministries and media teams. The aid will be symbolically received by Papua New Guinea representatives at the Indonesian Embassy in Port Moresby on Tuesday (9/7/2024).
In addition to Papua New Guinea, the Indonesian government has also sent similar aid to Afghanistan to support reconstruction after the October 2023 earthquake. The aid is scheduled to be delivered to Afghanistan at the same time as to Papua New Guinea, on July 15, 2024.
